2026-work in progress

this project takes a critical position toward passive comfort and proposes aliveness as a condition for not being absorbed by it.

the contemporary ideal of minimizing friction produces a hyper-comfortable, mediated condition in which comfort becomes increasingly passive. here, comfort is not understood as the absence of discomfort, but as the capacity to remain active within it.

constructed from scrap materials, the work treats collecting and cleaning as forms of care, establishing a reciprocal relation with material.

through unstable and responsive uses of metal, the pieces move, react, and engage the body, shifting it from passive support toward active participation.

this project examines comfort as a historically and materially conditioned construct rather than a neutral or universally desirable state.

contemporary configurations of comfort are closely tied to the reduction of friction, the outsourcing of effort, and the mediation of bodily experience through technological systems. within this framework, the body is increasingly stabilized and distanced from direct engagement with material environments.

the work situates itself within this condition by reconsidering the relation between comfort, effort, and bodily activity. discomfort is approached as a generative condition that sustains attention, adjustment, and movement. in this sense, comfort is addressed as a capacity that emerges through sustained engagement rather than withdrawal.

scrap material functions as both a conceptual and material framework. its prior use, irregularity, and resistance limit total control and introduce variability into the process. the acts of collecting and cleaning are treated as integral components of the work, establishing a form of material attentiveness.

metal is employed for its elastic and responsive properties. the resulting structures remain unstable, requiring continuous bodily negotiation. they do not fix the body in a predetermined position, but instead produce conditions in which movement, adaptation, and sensory awareness become necessary.

the work proposes a relational model in which material and body remain co-constitutive, engaged in an ongoing and dynamic exchange.
